Romanticizing Tomas Tranströmer - Haiku Special - November 17, 2014

Lost in thoughts of home -
sitting in a prison cell
does she wear his ring

Eating peas and bread
the boy dreams of pop-cycles -
walking with his girl

(c) G.s.k. '14

These are the instructions for this week's Carpe Diem Haiku Kai special:
"Romancing the haiku",  the goal is to write a "romantic" haiku ... So  the goal of our Special, which is usually to write in the same spirit as the featured haiku-poet, today will be to write a "romantic" haiku".

Night—a twelve-wheeler
goes by making the dreams of
the inmates shiver

The boy drinks his milk
and sleeps cozy in his cell,
a mother of stone

Tranströmer wrote these haiku while he worked in Hällby Youth Prison (1959). He published nine haiku during the time he worked in the juvenile prison.

Our host's contributions:

ten p.m. - lights go out

the inmates dream their dreams -
a heart on the beach

furtive glances exchanged
between cell mates

  1. The question about wearing the ring hints at a tenuous connection...

    1. Yes ... a young person in prison ... his girl still at home .. at that age these sort relationships are tenuous in any case ...

  2. A question that would keep him awake long hours at night, I'm sure ---
And the second one -- innocence lost --
Really magnified by the black and white jail-like photo ---
    Great work!
