Vineyards - September 19, 2014

I've said it before on this blog ... but I'll say it again, this year has been disasterous for grapes in my country.  The rain was far too abundant and so the grapes were watery and much of the crop rotted or was attacked by fungus.  So today for Carpe Diem Haiku Kai's prompt "vinyards" i have a sad haiga ... and a sedoka.

Sedoka*

this rainy summer
the year two thousand fourteen
grapes are soggy and tasteless
sad vendemia
under the driving rain-fall
autumn crop of bitter wine

*A sedoka is a waka formed by two katauta of 5-7-7 onji,  they should be able to stand alone but yet compliment and complete each other.  There's no English requirement for a 5-7-7 syllable count as sedoka is not very popular and so has not been regimented, but I thought I'd do it this way.

  1. How sad ... But with the photo it makes a beautiful haiga.

Long time since I've written sedoka - will have to follow your lead and give it a shot. Interesting how it's less regimented.

    1. You know ... the less well known a waka, the less "schools of thought" have bothered to reflect upon it ... leaving a lot more freedom of movement. I think the most rigid of all is the American Haiku Society's idea of what is and what isn't a haiku. I've heard of certain in-fighting back in the earlier history of haiku in America that would amaze you. And some haiku poets (especially American haiku poets) are still pretty rigid - and don't mind telling you where you've gone wrong in writing your ku ;-)

So I like waka ... especially when it's obscure (oops I've taken off here, haven't I)

    2. No worries -- I wrote a reply to one of your comments at BIOLI which said much the same thing -- guy was pretty obnoxious about re-writing a prose-haiku piece (ahem!) which I submitted -- because if you write a 5-7-5 haiku you're just writing too much. Not clean enough! Not concise enough! Too wordy! (And in other places if you don't write a 5/7/5 you're not writing *real* haiku.) But we've discussed this one at length before -- it's just that the "journal editor" really ticked me off. Pompous twit! ;)

    3. Ah yes ... the journals ... oh well, what can I say ... it seems that there are just some people who feel they have to tell everyone "how it's done" and doesn't really matter what it is ;-)

    1. I think you commented on Harvest ... as harvest here is fruit and especially grapes ... thought I didn't lament the loss as I have here, I did mention the bad year.
