This is what Jack Kerouac had to say about haiku:
"The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese
Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined
to seventeen syllables but since the language
structure is different I don't think American
Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be
completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry
about syllables because American speech is
something again...bursting to pop.
Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free
of all poetic trickery and make a little picture
and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi
Pastorella."

What a great response Georgia! I can really see Kerouac in the 3rd and 4th :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jen glad you think so!

ReplyDeleteThanks .. glad I got that grin from tou!
DeleteI like the bikini one...lot of fun:)
ReplyDelete:-D glad you enjoyed it!
DeleteThe bikini haiku really does seem to channel Kerouac, with great observation and humour. Of course, the humour could become a little dark if you follow the logic of the setting - after all, what is the lifeguard distracted from? Who's not waving, but drowning..? ;)
ReplyDeleteYou're a bright cookie Blake ... seems like no one took it beyond face value ... the though only occurred to me after i'd written the ku but decided to let it stand.
