I love traditions and those linked to the family and prosperity abound through out the world especially during the various New Year celebrations.  Go and visit Carpe Diem Haiku Kai for more about Kagamimochi ... as for lentils ... in Italy, on New Year's day it is nearly obligatory to eat lentils in one form or another so that family and friends will be prosperous throughout the year.  For the occasion I prepared a dish of Persian Rice with lentils ... not everyone can stomach lentil soup ;-)

Haiku Horizons- Circle

Carpe Diem Haiku Kai - Family and Kagamimochi

  1. I'm imagining the family members circling the table, eyeing the soup, wondering if it's going to be as good this year as it was last year.

    Stolen Rice Cakes

  2. I have heard of lentil soup from Hungarian friends.. Supposedly bringing in money..

  3. Great job of combining all the traditions both familiar and otherwise!

  4. I was hoping you'd mention lentils -- read about them while researching the "whys" of "pork and sauerkraut"! You'll find lentil traditions in places here with a large Italian community -- like my mom's home town which was split between (recent) Polish and Italian immigrants. And not too far south of here -- in WV and further south -- you'll find a lot of folks who swear by black eyed peas on New Year's Day. (Mmmmmm! Hoppin' John!)

Love how you've combined the prompts here - brilliant -- so appropriate too.

This haiku series made me happy. Love it :)
