At Carpe Diem Haiku Kai for the past week we've been looking at the 7 sacred Japanese flowers used in haiku, today was dedicated to the Large Pink (Nadeshiko) or Carnation.

nadeshiko ya jizô bosatsu no ato saki ni

blooming pinks
behind and in front
of Saint Jizo

nadeshiko ya hitotsu saite wa tsuyu no tame

pinks--
one is blooming
thanks to the dew

Here is our hosts haiku . I was surprised to discover that carnations are often used in funeral bouquets in Holland, this is a particularly poignant haiku.

 on this grave
next to a little teddy bear
purple carnations
