Writing with Gary Gay - October 22, 2014

The Ghost Writer at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai this week is Garry Gay haiku poet since 1979 and photographer, co-founder of the Haiku Poets of Northern California and inventor of the Rengay, a modern version of the Renga. Our goal:

"create ... haunting  misdirection’s."

taken by storm
screeching winds howl
over the grave yard

black claws in the sky
death bells toll in the city
halloween weather

screech in the night
a sheet blew off the clothes-line
onto the alley cat

(c) G.s.k. '14

Being rather literal minded, I found this a particularly difficult prompt, this was our hosts haiku example:

My skeleton
going for a walk
in the cemetery

I wanted  to see some more of Gary's haiku so I googled and came up with Terebess Asia Online  (which you might want to go and visit!) where I found quite a few, and more inspiration ...

Autumn begins
leaves follow me
into the shed

 used book store;
the cat moves quietly
among dead authors

  1. These examples of Garys are stunning. Thanks for the reference.
Sheets on the clothes lines blowing off on to the alley cat could cause quite a racket...I can imagine all the abusive expletives from the neighbours in Italian...like a Fellini movie :) Good one !

    1. Lol ... yes, you can be sure that cat would yowl! It was inspired actually by a wind storm we had last night, somebody lost their garden table's cloth ... a cat was playing with it when it billowed up like a ghost ... the cat jumped and ran away .. but the haiku stayed ;-) Glad you enjoyed Gary's examples .. there were more on the prompt post (linked) ... but as usual I was in a rush and didn't realize that.

Love the mix of the eerie and the humorous here.

    1. Cool no? It seemed so suitable for Halloween ... and reminded me somehow of the wind storm we were having here as I wrote the post .. even to the bell tolling.

    1. Thanks Kristjaan ... I was just saying to Rallentanda that I'd missed the link due to my hurried harried state that morning and I'm so happy you pointed it out so I can go and check it out ... I'd really enjoy seeing his photo-haiga which is one of the aspects I like very much of haiku writing.

  4. How I'd love to see that alley cat running around with a sheet on its back! (Or maybe, if the night were very dark, I wouldn't!)

    1. I think if the night was right .. the wind howling (and cat yowling) a church bell maybe tolling in the background and not far from the grave-yard, what would usually be funny could be a little scary :-)
