Time Glass Challenge - Renga - December 15, 2014

Winter Wonderland

Christmas is near

in the sleepy Alpine vale
shops glitter with lights
under low heavy grey skies
there’s a promise of snow

in that valley
among bare trees in the park

children play
their smiling elders watch on
as the first snow flakes fall

soon white

the slide and the swings
abandoned
kids run home for their sleds
some build funny snow men

Santa on the corner

rings his bell by a cauldron
asking for alms
to buy blankets and soup
for the poor and homeless

cold winter beauty

trees frosted in hoary white
the pond is like glass
an old man sells chestnuts
wrapped in brown paper bags

carolers sing

under the glow of lamp light
in crystal voices
of good kings and shepherds

and white winter wonderlands

 Christmas is near

kids build funny snow men
Santa asks for alms
an old man sells chestnuts
carolers sing winter songs *

* and ending variation .. what do you think?

Christmas is near
trees frosted in hoary white
shops glitter with lights
carolers sing winter songs
of winter wonderlands

This week’s challenge is to  write a chained poem (Renga) of maximum eight (8) stanza inspired on the image and the prompt WINTER WONDERLAND within 24 hours.  Linked to Carpe Diem Haiku Kai.

  1. There is a different bustle of activity when most have time to enjoy the weather -
A friend from Australia told me of their first cold holidays and thinking how perfect it would be - that winter scene. But then missed the BBQ and the children running out of doors bare foot in the warm air.

  2. Another masterpiece from the queen of renga -- ;)
Seriously though -- I really do enjoy this -- and would vote for ending #2.
Like spending a day in a quaint village ---

    1. Thanks Siggi! I preferred the second ending ... but liked the first one ... maybe I should just write a tanka! Thanks for clicking the box .. eccezionale means fantastic and if that's what you meant ... thanks a million!

Peace and love to you too!

  4. Wonderful.. I got the image of a camera moving through scene at the start of some film.. setting the scene with the chestnuts and the.. in that sense I liked the first ending more... it wrapped the scenery together better for me.. the second one was perhaps more lyrical....

    1. Thanks Bjorn - loved your comment on the poem, and quite suitable as I usually walk around with a camera. I can see what you mean about the different tone of the two endings. Thanks for giving me your opinion!
